Varicose veins
Varicose veins are dilated and deformed veins of purple-blue color that appear along the legs and can cause pain and swelling. Its occurrence is more common in people who need to stand for long periods.
The veins of the legs, which return the blood to the heart after irrigating the lower limbs, have valves whose purpose is to prevent the return of blood to the feet by the action of gravity. Sometimes these valves do not work efficiently and the blood deposits in the veins causing deformation, swelling and changes in the sensitivity of the skin.
In women, during menstruation and in pregnancy, especially, the symptoms tend to worsen.
Higher severity episodes may occur both from dilation of the deep and superficial veins. In these cases of venous insufficiency, persistent edema in the feet, leg ulcers and changes in the pigmentation of the skin may occur.
Treatment
Surface varicose veins can be easily recognized by observing the person standing. The most common treatment is the surgical removal of compromised veins. The surgeon makes several incisions, removes the affected veins and protects the leg (s) with bandages. Surgical procedure is fast, hospitalization time is short and recovery at home can last for a few weeks.
In cases of superficial varicose veins, it is possible to inject drugs to necrotic veins so that they no longer carry blood. This procedure normally requires two or three applications, but is not indicated for the treatment of larger varicose veins nor for those located in deep veins.
Whatever treatment is used, it is advisable to walk daily to stimulate blood circulation and the growth of healthy new vessels.
I love it!
Varicose veins do not usually cause more serious complications. In more serious cases, however, to avoid pain, swelling and skin problems, some care should be taken:
* Avoid standing, standing in the same position, for a long time. If you are forced to do so, try to move. This causes the leg muscles to help the blood circulate;
* Several times a day, try raising your legs above heart level for a few minutes to facilitate the return of blood to the center of the body;
* Remember that it is very important to wear elastic stockings. The results will be even better if you wear them early, before getting out of bed;
* Walk. Walking is key to preventing varicose veins.
WarningHurting a vein with varicose veins can cause heavy bleeding. In that case, lie down immediately and raise the injured leg. Compress the wound with a clean towel until the bleeding is tight. Then wash with running water and soap and protect the area with a compressive dressing.
Varicose veins predispose people to phlebitis, painful inflammation of the veins. Blood clots can form in the affected veins. When one of them setstles into a deep vein, there is the possibility that a fragment will break off and, moving through the venous circulation, reaches the lung. In the event of any painful inflammation, with or without hardening of the area, in one or both legs, which does not disappear with its elevation, do not waste time and seek a doctor immediately.
In case of intense and continuous pain, seek immediate medical attention.
