About 70% of Brazilian adults have some type of varicose vein, according to the Ministry of Health. And one who thinks that it is merely esthetic annoyance - gradually, the condition evolves and the accumulation of blood in the legs can generate complications like pain, swelling and even thrombosis.
The good news is that, at the beginning of February, the Unified Health System (SUS) began to provide the so-called sclerotherapy. At first, there will be a prioritization for the more severe cases, which usually involve saphenous impairment (vein that goes from the ankle to the groin).

"One of the main advantages of this technique is the absence of cuts and hospitalization. The procedure is performed at the outpatient clinic and the patient returns home on the same day, with no need for rest, "explains Solange Evangelista, a member of the board of the Department of Venous Diseases of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, Minas Gerais.
It works like this: with the aid of an ultrasound device, the professional injects into the diseased vein a medicine in the form of foam in order to destroy it. Then the body begins to use other ways, which normalizes the blood flow.
"On average, three or four sessions already provide a satisfactory result," says Solange. She also points out that there are almost no contraindications, but it is important to go through the evaluation of a trusted doctor - who has some kind of allergy to the remedy used in foam sclerotherapy, for example, should at least take special care.

But Igor Rafael Sincos, head of vascular surgery at Carapicuíba General Hospital in São Paulo, ponders: "When talking about alternatives to saphenous vein removal, laser and radiofrequency devices tend to be more effective in patients without thrombosis because they close this vein in a single session through the heat. "
Whether it is to prevent the appearance of varicose veins or to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment chosen, some relatively simple care makes a difference. Avoid spending long periods standing or wearing high-heeled shoes, control body weight and blood pressure, practice physical activity regularly, and above all, do not ignore the symptoms of the disease as common as they may seem.
