About 70% of Brazilian adults have some type of varicose vein, according to the Ministry of Health. And one who thinks that it is merely esthetic annoyance - gradually, the condition evolves and the accumulation of blood in the legs can generate complications like pain, swelling and even thrombosis.

The good news is that, at the beginning of February, the Unified Health System (SUS) began to provide the so-called sclerotherapy. At first, there will be a prioritization for the more severe cases, which usually involve saphenous impairment (vein that goes from the ankle to the groin).

The procedure is performed at the outpatient clinic and the patient returns home on the same day, with no need for rest, "explains Solange Evangelista, a member of the board of the Department of Venous Diseases of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, Minas Gerais.
